Promotion of good governance in regional countries can prevent people from joining extremist groups and would deny terrorists new breeding grounds, says Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
Despite the territorial defeat of the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group in Iraq and Syria, the region is still vulnerable to the formidable challenge presented by extremism, Zarif told a session of the Valdai Discussion Club in the Russian capital Moscow on Monday, according to a text of his speech carried by Fars News Agency.
“Their networks are almost intact, and their hate ideology still being spread by the same petrodollars,” he said, adding that the offshoots IS planted in the wider region from Libya to Afghanistan are “death machines on rampage.”
Preparations are underway for Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to meet in April in Turkey, RIA news agency said on Monday, quoting Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Reuters reported. The three countries' foreign ministers are due to meet in Kazakhstan in two weeks to prepare the ground for the Istanbul summit on Syria, the TASS news agency reported earlier on Monday, citing Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. The three countries are working together to try to push the troubled Syrian peace process forward. Putin and his Turkish counterpart discussed Syria by phone on Monday. In addition, Rouhani discussed the latest developments in the Arab country with Erdogan on the same day, calling for joint efforts to help stabilize the war-torn state and enhance regional security.
France reaffirmed its commitment to the Iran nuclear deal on Monday, saying Paris wanted the agreement to be strictly implemented and was continuing talks with its European and US partners on the program.
The foreign ministry said France was concerned about Iran’s ballistic missile program and its activities in the region, mentioning its support for Houthi fighters in Yemen, Reuters reported.
The news agency had reported on Sunday that the US is hoping to convince its European allies—Britain, France, and Germany—to improve the Iran nuclear deal over time in return for US President Donald Trump keeping the pact alive by renewing US sanctions relief in May.
The United States has sketched out a path under which three key European allies would simply commit to try to improve the Iran nuclear deal over time in return for US President Donald Trump keeping the pact alive by renewing US sanctions relief in May.
The approach, outlined in a recent US State Department cable obtained by Reuters and an interview with a senior department official last week, still faces obstacles. The European allies are uncertain what will satisfy Trump and are reluctant to make such a commitment only to find that he asks them for more, two European officials and two former US officials said.

An Iranian airline under sanctions by the US for ferrying weapons and fighters into Syria repeatedly bought US-made jet engines and parts through Turkish front companies over the past several years, most recently in December, federal investigators said in a new US government filing. The US says in the filing that a Turkish woman set up a series of shell companies to buy equipment from US suppliers for Iran’s Mahan Air, helping the airline circumvent the longstanding sanctions and fueling suspicions about Iran within the administration of US President Donald Trump, The Wall Street Journal reported.
