Lake Urumia’s water surface has risen by 47 cm (about a half meter) now compared to the beginning of the current water year (started October 1), Mehrang Dousti Rezaei, head of the water research center at West Azerbaijan Regional Water Company, was quoted as saying by Alef News Agency. The lake’s rising water surface has been rare in the past 18 years but it still needs a 3.5 meter increase in water level to return to its earlier glory. The lake has faced drought in the recent years.
