Noting that the negative impact of the pandemic on Iran’s foreign trade is 10%, the official said, “US Sanctions are largely to blame for the slowdown in exports. They were getting tougher by the day since the beginning of last year up until the end of Donald Trump’s term in office; he churned out sanctions against Iranian companies and institutions and those foreign companies which were cooperating with Iran until the last day of his presidency. However, Iran’s economy has survived both the US sanctions and Covid-19.”

The world’s 64 steelmakers produced 162.9 billion tons of steel over the past year, up 4.8% YOY. The EU produced 12.2 million tons of crude steel in January 2021, a decrease of 0.4% compared to 2020.
Iranian airports' domestic passenger traffic during the first 10 months of the Iranian fiscal year (March 22, 2020-Jan. 19) declined by 42% year-on-year to 20.41 million, according to the latest report published by Iran Airports Company.
Over 161,444 tons of cargos were handled during the 10 months under review, which show a 39% drop compared with the corresponding period of last year.
The IAC report also shows that airports in Iran handled 226,534 landings and takeoffs during the period, posting a 23% YOY fall.
Tehran's Mehrabad International Airport accounted for 7.53 million of passenger traffic, 39% lower than the same period of last year.

“During the 10 months to Jan. 19, Iran manufactured 1.7 million refrigerators, which indicate a 30% increase year-on-year. Washing machine production grew 53% to reach 880,000 and evaporative cooler production jumped 11.9% to hit 854,000 during the period. A total of 995,000 television sets were also produced during the 10-month period, registering a 44% rise compared with the corresponding period of last year. The growth in production of home appliances during the current Iranian year has been unprecedented in the past decade,” he was quoted as saying by IRIB News.
Noting that the main challenge facing the industry is the lack of raw materials, the official said, “For instance, manufacturers of refrigerators and freezers need a thermoplastic polymer called ABS [Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene]. The Industries Ministry should provide raw materials in cooperation with petrochemical industry. Home appliance producer refused to sign an export contract because they were not confident that there would be sufficient inventory of petrochemical raw materials. The supply of steel sheets, copper and aluminum parts as well as the allocation of foreign currency for the purchase of essential imported parts are also challenging for the industry.”
During the latest round of bond auctions held by the Central Bank of Iran this week, the government sold bonds worth 30.3 trillion ($121 million).
This week's auction featured a bigger participation of institutional and retail investors in the stock market, as they bought almost half of the bonds.

Air quality monitoring stations in the namesake capital city of Tehran Province show people continued to breathe more polluted air in February, compared with the same period of last year.
A close analysis of Air Quality Index during the period makes this very clear. AQI is used by government agencies to announce the prevailing level of air pollution, or forecast future days.
The index categorizes conditions dictated by a measure of polluting matters into good (0-50), moderate (51-100), unhealthy for sensitive groups (101-150), unhealthy (151-200), very unhealthy (201-300) and hazardous (301-500).
In February, people in Tehran did not see clear blue skies even for a single day. Instead, the moderate status was recorded for 22 days, as the index hovered between 51 and 100.
Those with respiratory disorders, cardiovascular diseases, the elderly, pregnant women and children were warned of their outdoor exposure for six days, as AQI remained unhealthy for sensitive group.
