Former US secretary of state John Kerry has said that President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal earlier this year was "a very dangerous and ill-advised move."
Kerry, who was promoting his new book, "Every Day Is Extra," told the CNN's Fareed Zakaria on Sunday that the move "is not based on any broad strategy that is drawing other countries to the table to be supportive of it.
Kerry said he believes Trump's decision to rescind the deal was based solely on a campaign promise.
Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani says Iran is in dire need of a major "economic surgery" to alleviate the pain inflicted on it by the US sanctions, which will greatly impact its key oil industry.
"From an economic perspective, the country today is in a situation where there is need for surgeries," he said in a speech during a visit to the southern Fars Province on Monday, IRNA reported.
"We are experiencing conditions where there is international pressure on the country, and at the same time we are facing domestic problems," he added, referring to US President Donald Trump tightening the screws on Iran following his controversial exit from the 2015 nuclear deal.

Efforts are being made to stop using diesel as feedstock in the southern Sistan-Baluchestan Province's power plants by the end of the current fiscal year that ends in March 2019, the head of Zahedan's National Iranian Oil Byproducts Distribution Company said.
"Diesel consumption stood at 36 million liters during the last five months, indicating a 76-million- liter decline compared with last year's corresponding period," Kourosh Baladast was also quoted as saying by Shana on Monday.
"Power plants are moving toward replacing polluting fuels with natural gas as a cleaner energy resource, which will have profound effects on curbing air pollution," he said.
The US oil output cannot replace Iranian crude in the international markets following sanctions imposed on Iran’s key sector that are due to take effect on Nov. 5, the Oil Ministry’s former deputy director for OPEC affairs said.
“Such a scheme is not applicable in the oil market due to two reasons, one of which is oil quality that is a major hurdle, as the US oil is of light type, whereas Iranian crude is relatively heavy. The second obstacle is that the US administration cannot issue a decree to oblige private oil companies to sell their output to India, for instance,” Reza Modir was also quoted as saying by ILNA on Monday.
Tehran Regional Electricity Company has planned to hold a tender to develop 167 substations in the capital city, the head of the company said on Monday.
"The international tender that will be issued soon is aimed at selecting qualified local and foreign contractors to boost the metropolitan's power infrastructure," Gholamreza Khoshkholq was also quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency on Monday.
The official noted that as per the law, contractors are obliged to procure 80% of their equipment from domestic manufacturers, so the more they purchase local products, the bigger their chances of winning the tender.
According to Khoshkholq, the plan is part of a bigger scheme to establish 312 substations across Tehran, of which 135 projects have been commissioned through tenders.

The announcement was made by Amir Tayyebinejad, managing director of Qom Industrial Parks Company, adding that the sweet product has established a foothold in international markets, IRNA reported.

According to Director General of Kish Island Ports and Maritime Organization Ahmad Shahriari, a total of 5,891 tons of non-oil goods were imported into the port during the same period to register a 70% decline year-on-year, the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development’s news service reported, citing Hormozgan Province Ports and Maritime General Office.
The Iranian Cabinet permitted, in its Sept. 5 session, the import of medical equipment that have locally-manufactured counterparts due to the special condition of the country. Such imports must first secure the approval of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade, Mehr News Agency reported on Sunday. Late June, the government had banned the imports of more than 1,300 commodities categorized as “non-essential goods with domestic counterparts”.
Iran traded 6.39 million tons of non-oil commodities worth $3.43 billion with Iraq during the first five months of the current fiscal year (March 21-Aug. 22). Iran’s exports to Iraq stood at 6.36 million tons worth $3.41 billion, up 17.20% and 29.35% in tonnage and value respectively year-on-year. Iraq exported 33,441 million tons of goods worth $16.15 million to Iran, down 52.01% and 55.53% in tonnage and value respectively YOY. The government’s recent ban on exports of certain products, including tea, oilseeds, palm oil, sugar, milk powder, baby formula, butter and meat, is aimed at regulating the domestic market and protecting low-income households, the deputy head of Trade Promotion Organization of Iran said.
“The government grants subsidized foreign currency for importing these essential goods and their raw materials, so Iranian consumers should enjoy this subsidy,” Mohammad Reza Modoudi was also quoted as saying by IRNA.
Noting that lifting the ban on exports would amount to a big, special privilege for the neighboring countries, the official said, people from neighboring countries travel to Iran and buy these subsidized essential goods and sell them beyond Iranian borders at open market rates.

The average price of exports from this sector stood at $493 per ton, which is up by 11% YOY.

According to the report published on the monetary regulator’s official website on Monday, the figure was higher by 20.1% compared to the same month of the previous year and 4.7% higher compared to the end of the previous year on March 20, 2018.

The Central Bank of Iran notified a directive on Monday, elaborating on rules based on which exporters are required to bring back their export earnings into the “economic cycle” of the country. The directive has six articles and gives exporters three months to declare 95% of their hard currency from the time their customs export license has been issued, CBI’s website reported. Exporters can keep the remaining 5% for such costs as marketing, advertisement and overseas office expenses. Any extension of the three-month deadline has to be approved by the Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade. Hard currency repatriation can be undertaken through imports by the exporter or a third party, repayment of foreign currency loans, sale of hard currency to banks or certified exchange bureaux or making foreign currency deposits in banks. The banks said any special services to exporters, including obtaining loans and commercial cards, is contingent upon them meeting their “foreign currency commitments”. After introducing strict forex controls in April, the government on August 6 eased foreign exchange rules and allowed exchange shops to resume work at open market rates. The latest move is intended to accelerate currency supply into the market.

Tehran Stock Exchange’s main index gained 4,764.26 points or 3.35% on Monday to end trading at 146,998.7.
The record jump was most likely caused by the relative price adjustment of corporate stocks, the termination of fluctuations in rival markets (such as gold and forex markets), stability of global prices and rumors of Iran Mercantile Exchange eliminating price ceiling for steel products.
At present, steel products are allowed 15% fluctuations on IME, but the induction of two new steel ingot providers into IME and the readjustment of price ceiling for other base metals led investors to believe that good news regarding steel will come soon, according to Donya-e-Bourse's analysis.
The jump, although led by large-scale industries of base metals, petrochemicals and oil products, was not limited to these industries as 37 out of the 38 industries listed at TSE had positive impacts on the index, with the exception of paper products, meaning new capital is being injected into the market and new players are appearing on the scene.
