Implementation of the global plan for treatment of hydrocephalus (a build-up of fluid in the cavities deep within the brain) has been initiated in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, by Prof. Majid Samii, distinguished Iranian neurosurgeon and medical scientist. The Iranian Embassy in Bishkek recently announced that Dr. Samii has started medical services for children with hydrocephalus in the neurosurgery ward of Bishkek hospital. The specialized ward was constructed and equipped with the help from Samii and a German charity foundation. The ailment can be easily treated through simple neurosurgery on a newborn. It can be harmful to health or even be fatal if not treated. “Annually, 200 babies are born with hydrocephalus in Kyrgyzstan and that’s why we chose the Central Asian country,” Samii said. Hydrocephalus in the brain causes increased intracranial pressure inside the skull and can cause progressive enlargement of the head, leading to convulsion, tunnel vision, and mental disability.
