So far 1.3 million nomadic households have been covered by the Social Insurance Fund for farmers, villagers and nomads launched by the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labor, and Social Welfare, said Mohammad Reza Rostami, director general of the fund. He said 2.6 million rural households are also under coverage of other insurance companies and “nearly the same number are not under any insurance cover,” IRNA reported. To encourage rural and nomad communities to register for insurance, “we have reduced the insurance premium payment by the insured to barely 5%,” he added. The insurance plan aims, among other things, to help curb migration from rural to urban areas.
