An advisor to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution has referred to ties between Tehran and Damascus as “strategic”, describing them as “the backbone” of Iran’s ties with regional allies, IRNA reported. “Since the victory of the revolution (in 1979) Iran and Syria have had strategic relations which have formed the backbone of Iran’s ties to regional allies, which besides Syria, include Iraq and Lebanon along with the Palestinians,” Ali Akbar Velayati said. Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the visiting Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi on Tuesday, Velayati reiterated Tehran’s opposition to any proposal to the Syrian crisis that fails to take into account the views of the Syrian masses and their government.  “Any decision about Syria’s future rests with the Syrian people themselves,” the former foreign minister was quoted as saying. Syria is in the grip of a civil war for five years that has devastated the Arab country.
