The foreign ministry summoned the Saudi chargé d’affaires in Tehran to protest remarks by a Saudi military official claiming that Tehran has trained fighters of the Houthi movement in Yemen.
A statement by the foreign ministry on Wednesday said the Saudi diplomat was summoned late in the evening to hear Iran’s official protest to the allegations, Press TV reported.
A military spokesman for the Saudi-led campaign against the Houthi movement said on Tuesday Iran has trained Houthi militias to “harm Yemenis.”
“We have evidence that Iran trained Houthi militias on operating fighter jets,” Saudi Brigadier General Ahmed Asiri told reporters.
The foreign ministry rejected the remarks as “incorrect,” saying Iran still insists that the conflict in Yemen is a domestic issue and the warring sides should try to find a political solution.
