Iran's exports to Oman have increased fivefold over the past six years, the head of Iran-Oman Chamber of Commerce said.
Mohsen Zarrabi made the statement during a meeting of Omani Ambassador to Iran Saud bin Ahmed bin Khalid Al-Birwani with Iranian businessmen in Urmia, the largest city in Iran's West Azarbaijan Province, on Wednesday, IRNA reported.
"Before the current government [of President Hassan Rouhani] took office, the volume of exports to Oman was $146 million, which now stands at $728 million," he said, adding that bilateral trade has grown from $220 million in the fiscal 2014-15 to $1.16 billion annually.
According to Zarrabi, Oman's total imports amount to about $20 billion per year, of which Iran's share is 3.6%.
"We are looking to increase it to 10%, which is close to $2 billion," he said.
Oman's ambassador to Iran paid a two-day visit to West Azarbaijan to survey its economic capacities. The envoy described Iran as an important country and a friend and brother of Oman.
Speaking in a meeting with West Azarbaijan’s governor, Al-Birwani said Iran and Oman have reinforced political and economic relations during his six-year mission in Iran. He announced that Iranian Tourism Minister Ali Asghar Mounssan is scheduled to travel to Oman.
The Omani diplomat also welcomed the idea of launching direct flights between West Azarbaijan and Oman.
