Young Iranian volleyball players defeated Italy, during the final match of FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship 2019 Saturday in Manamah, to capture their first ever world championship title.
Iranians showed a remarkable performance to defeat the previously undefeated Italy 3-2 (17-25, 25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12) in an absorbing five-set match.
Porya Yali and Captain Amirhossein Esfandiar played the leading role in Iran's historic victory, scoring 23 and 22 points, respectively.
Esfandiar was named the most valued player of FIVB Volleyball Men's U-21 World Championship. Morteza Sharifi was named the best outside spiker and Mohammadreza Hazratpourtalatappeh was named Best Libero.
Iran had previously won a single bronze medal once in 2007.
