The tragicomedy “Machiavelli: The Art of Terror” written by Robert Cohen is to be read on stage at the Neauphle-le-Château Mansion in Tehran on July 21.
Based on the disputed political essay of Machiavelli’s “The Prince,” the play is directed by Qolamreza Shahbazi who has also translated Robert Cohen’s text, Honaronline reported on its Persian website.
The play is set in the early 1500s and centers on Machiavelli’s challenge with the radical general Cesare Borgia and Machiavelli’s eventual emergence after he is tortured for betrayal as a political essayist and rueful comic playwright.
Actors Parsa Pouladvand, Emad Javidpour, Mohammad Hassani, Armin Khoshniyat and Simindokht Shakeri will read the dialogues.
A director, playwright and translator, Robert Cohen, 79, received his PhD in fine arts from the Yale School of Drama. He is founder of Chair of Drama at the University of California and has written three plays and has eight dramatic and opera translations.
Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (1469-1527) was an Italian diplomat, politician, historian, philosopher, humanist and writer of the Renaissance period. He is called the father of modern political science. His famous work “The Prince” is a theory on how to govern. The treatise is contributed to the modern negative connotations of the words “politics” and “politician” in western countries.
The descriptions within his work have the general theme of accepting that the aims of princes - such as glory and survival - can justify the use of immoral means to achieve those ends.
