Natural disasters such as frost and drought inflict losses of between 120 and 150 trillion rials ($2.8-3.5 billion) to farmers and orchard owners in Iran every year, a board member at Agricultural Insurance Fund said. Niyaz-Ali Ebrahimi-Pak added that the recent frost caused damages to farms and orchards in 21 provinces, adding that Qazvin, Alborz, Tehran, Zanjan and East Azarbaijan were the hardest hit. The Agricultural Insurance Fund, affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture, is tasked with insuring products in farming, horticulture, livestock, poultry, honeybee, silkworm and fisheries sectors in the face of natural disasters such as droughts, earthquakes, hailstorms and thunderstorms, frost, fire and pests, as well as quarantine plant and animal diseases.
