Tehran’s philharmonic orchestra will hold concerts on January 5 and 6, 2015 at Vahdat Hall, said Arash Guran, the conductor of the concerts.
“What we have chosen for this program is classical pieces from the 1880 – 2015 period by a number of composers such as Tchaikovsky, Arvo Part, and Henryk Gorecki,” Guran said at a press conference.
The 80-member Philharmonic Orchestra of Tehran performed its last concert in Vahdat Hall last year accompanied by the Japanese pianist Noriko Ogawa, which Guran referred to “as a precious experience.” Ogawa is one of the most competent pianists globally known, gaining her fame from the 1987 Leeds International Piano Competition.
A full-size orchestra (about 100 musicians) may sometimes be called a symphony orchestra or philharmonic orchestra; these modifiers do not necessarily indicate any strict difference in either the instrumental constitution or role of the orchestra, but can be useful to distinguish different ensembles based in the same city (for instance, the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra). A symphony orchestra will usually have over 80 musicians on its roster.
Noting that philharmonic orchestras are financially supported all over the world, Guran, however, lamented that his group does not receive any financial support other than the sales on tickets.
