Israel launched several missiles targeting military outposts near the Syrian capital, the Syrian military said on Tuesday.
An Israeli projectile was shot down by the Syrian air force they added, New Arab reported.
The Syrian air defense confronted the early morning missile attacks launched from Lebanese airspace on the outposts in the area of Qutayfeh in the Damascus countryside on Tuesday, according to the Syrian army statement.
Several missiles were launched at 2:40 am, followed by two more missiles at 3:04 am and four at 4:14 am. One missile was shot down, while the others caused material damage to Syrian military sites.
Al-Qutayfah is in the northeastern suburbs of Damascus, where Syrian Republican Guard units are known to have major outposts.
The Israeli military did not yet issue an official comment.
Dozens of airstrikes have been carried out by the Israeli military inside Syria in the past seven years. Describing the attack as “flagrant Israeli aggression”, the Syrian army renewed its warning of dangerous repercussions of such attacks in the statement, holding Israel “fully responsible for the consequences.”
Over the past few years, the Israeli military has launched sporadic attacks against various targets on Syrian soil, in assaults slammed by Syria as attempts to boost the terror groups wreaking havoc on the country.
On September 7, 2017, at least two Syrian soldiers were killed after Israeli fighter jets targeted an army position in the west-central province of Hama, just days after the Syrian army broke the siege imposed by the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group on the eastern city of Deir al-Zor.
On several occasions, the Syrian army has also confiscated Israeli-made arms and military equipment from terrorists fighting the government forces. Israel has also been providing medical treatment to the extremist militants wounded in Syria.
