Iran will send seven athletes to China to take part in the first edition of World Taekwondo Grand Slam Champions Series, December 23-24, in Wuxi, China.
The Iranian team will include seven athletes in both men and women’s sections, Mehr News Agency reported.
Nahid Kiani and Zahra Pouresmaeili will represent the nation in the women’s section while the country’s hopes in the men’s category will be pinned on Sajjad Mardani, Farza Ashourzadeh, Abolfazl Yaghoubi, Armin Hadipour and Ebrahim Safari.
As announced by the World Taekwondo Federation, for the first Grand Slam, the invited athletes in each category will be the Rio 2016 Olympic gold medalist, and two gold medalists from the 2017 World Taekwondo Championships, champion of the Grand-Prix Final in December; three winners of the Grand-Prix Series held earlier in 2017; as well as the winner of the 2016 Grand-Prix Final.
The gold winner in each category will take home $70,000, the silver medalist $20,000 and the bronze medalist $10,000.
