Iran’s National Paralympic Committee (NPC) offered sympathies to the families of victims of a strong earthquake that struck central Mexico on Sept. 19 and killed about 300 people.
According to the NPC website, NPC Secretary General Masoud Ashrafi in a message Saturday expressed sympathy with the Mexican people and the victims of the deadly tremor.
According to an official announcement of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), due to the situation in Mexico City, the “Mexico City 2017 World Para Powerlifting Championships” has been postponed to a later date.
“As a result of this tragedy, we are in full agreement that the immediate focus of the Mexican authorities should be on prioritizing recovery and rebuilding for the Mexican people and not organizing international sport events,” IPC President Andrew Parsons said in a statement.
Parsons said arrangements were being made for a safe departure of delegations that had already arrived.
The death toll in Mexico City surged to 295 on Saturday and was expected to rise further while the state of Morelos, south of Mexico City, was also hit hard with 55 killed.
