Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani met with his Iraqi counterpart Salim Abdullah al-Jabouri, who was accompanied by a high-ranking parliamentary delegation, in Tehran on Tuesday.
The two officials said Iran has a key role to play in helping restore stability in Iraq and the region.
The top lawmakers also discussed the ways to strengthen "brotherly" cooperation in various areas and exchanged views on the latest developments in the region, particularly in Iraq, IRNA reported.
Larijani said it is Iran's principled policy to assist Iraq to help improve security and stability in the country and establish a sustainable democracy, which involves all Iraqi tribes and ethnical groups in the country's political system, noting, "A stable and peaceful Iraq will be to the benefit of all the countries in the region and the world."
Larijani referred to the great potential for economic cooperation between the two states and said Iran, thanks to its technological and industrial capabilities, is prepared to provide any assistance to Iraq to help it address its economic challenges.
The Iraqi parliament speaker, for his part, appreciated Iran's strong support for the Iraqi government and nation and said, "Expansion of wide-ranging friendly cooperation with Iran is among the top priorities of the government and all political groups in Iraq."
Jabouri stressed that the fight against terrorist groups in the region demands collective cooperation between all regional states, with Iran as a key player in the effort.
