Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim Abdullah al-Jabouri heading a delegation arrived in Tehran on Tuesday for a three-day visit at the invitation of Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani.
Upon arrival, he was welcomed by Majlis Deputy Speaker Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabifard. In response to a question on the purpose of his visit, he said he has come to help improve Tehran-Baghdad relations and put into force agreements reached between the two countries, IRNA reported.
Aboutorabifard also touched on the common interests and political stances of the two states and said, “The Leader of the (Islamic) Revolution has described expansion of relations with Islamic states, particularly the friendly and brotherly country of Iraq, as strategic principle of the Islamic Republic of Iran”
The Leader and top-ranking Iranian officials regard Iraq’s sovereignty and security as those of the whole Muslim world, he stated.
He said the Arab country’s foes are also enemies of other Islamic states, adding, “We strongly stand by the Iraqi nation and its democratically elected government.”
He described the Iraqi parliament as the symbol of unity in the country, which includes representatives from various religious and ethnic groups, highlighting the role of the current parliament and its speaker in the formation of a government that represents national unity.
