Based on a newly-adopted traffic law, in accidents involving a disabled person in a wheelchair, the driver is considered guilty, according to the head of legal affairs at the Iran Traffic Police.
“Drivers must reduce speed as they see a disabled person on a wheelchair and allow the person to cross,” said Colonel Mohammad Tarahomi, Mehr News Agency reported.
In the past, if a car hit a disabled person while crossing the street at a non-zebra crossing area, the pedestrian would be regarded as the guilty party. They would even have to compensate the driver for any damages.
Drivers are also obliged to bring their cars to a halt if they see a blind person crossing, the colonel said.
