Railroads Hold 10.2% Share in Cargo Transit

Railroads hold a 10.2% share in Iran’s cargo transit, the deputy head of Islamic Republic of Iran Railways said. “By the end of the Sixth Five-Year Development Plan (2017-22), this share should rise to 30%, which requires an investment of 1.04 quadrillion rials ($27.5 billion),” Mohammad Reza Nosrat Nezami was also quoted as saying by the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development’s news service. Some 12 million tons of freight are annually transported via rail and road across the country. According to IRIR’s latest data, rail transit stood at 405,000 tons during the first four months of the current Iranian year (March 21-July 22), registering a 44% rise compared with the similar period of the year before.
