The government has set the seafood production target at 1.6 million tons per annum by 2022.
“We are also planning to become self-sufficient in the production of eyed eggs,” the head of Iran Fisheries Organization Hassan Salehi was quoted as saying by ILNA, adding that in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 10 centers for breeding eyed eggs used in fish farming are scheduled to be launched by 2022.
More than 1 million tons of seafood were produced in Iran in the last Iranian year (ended March 20, 2017), of which about 103,000 tons worth $412 million were exported.
About 470,000 tons were produced through aqua farming and the rest were harvested from Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf, Sea of Oman and international waters.
According to Salehi, per capita seafood consumption in Iran increased to 10.6 kilograms last year from 10 kilograms the year before, but it has yet to reach the global average of 20 kilograms per year.
