Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow has granted an amnesty for 37 Iranian nationals who were imprisoned in the Central Asian country over undisclosed charges, the deputy foreign minister for consular affairs told IRNA on Sunday.

Hassan Qashqavi said following efforts by the foreign ministry and the Iranian Embassy in Ashkhabad, the Turkmen president agreed to grant the amnesty on the occasion of the Neutrality Day of Turkmenistan, which is celebrated annually on December 12 as the second most important state holiday in Turkmenistan.

The released prisoners will come back to country over the next few days.

A number of Iranian and Turkmen nationals who were imprisoned in the two countries have been transferred to their own countries over the past few months as a result of close consultations between consular officials of the two neighbors.

According to Ambassador to Ashkhabad Mohammad Mousavi Golpayegani, 230 Iranian nationals are currently held in Turkmenistan's prisons.

An agreement on the repatriation of prisoners between Iran and Turkmenistan is currently under discussion and is expected to be signed in the near future.
