Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said Iraq can play an effective role in helping resolve the issues facing Syria and Lebanon. Rafsanjani made the remarks in a meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari in Tehran on Monday, IRNA reported. He said, “Muslim countries’ cooperation with Iraq is to the benefit of the Muslim world and can help strengthen Muslim nations and governments,” adding, “Some regional countries should be convinced that the fire of presence of terrorists (in Iraq) will engulf of the whole region.” Elsewhere, he said increased cooperation between the governments and parliaments of Iran and Iraq will help facilitate the progress and development of the two neighboring countries. He highlighted the importance of exchange of visits by the two countries’ officials and said enhanced Tehran-Baghdad ties can help boost cooperation between regional countries.
