A total of 4.1 billion cigarettes were domestically produced in Iran during the first two months of the current Iranian year (March 21-May 21), registering a 128% increase compared with the corresponding period of last year, chairman of the Tobacco Planning and Supervision Center said.
“Imports stood at 500 million during the period, indicating an 80% decline year-on-year,” Ali Asghar Ramzi was also quoted as saying by IRNA.
Ramzi expects Iran to achieve 91% self-sufficiency in cigarette production this year.
The figure for the last Iranian year, which ended on March 20, 2017, was 82%.
Iran aims to call a complete halt to cigarette imports in the near future.
