Ten people die each day waiting for a transplant and on average, there are 27,000 people on the waiting list for organ transplants with the hope to receive an organ from a deceased or sometimes a living donor, said Dr Farahnaz Sadeq Beigi, head of the Office for Providing Organs and Connective Tissues at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran. Annually, 8,000 people are declared brain dead. While around half of them are able to donate organs, only the families of 800 patients give consent, Salamat News website reported. There are currently 46 organ transplant centers in the country.
