The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) condemned the recent bombing attack on the Iranian ambassador's residence in the Yemeni capital Sanaa.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the 15-member body condemned in the strongest terms all acts of violence against diplomatic premises, which endanger innocent lives and "seriously impede the normal work of diplomatic representatives and officials."
"Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security…. Any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable regardless of their motivation," the UNSC said, IRNA reported.
It also urged UN member states to "cooperate actively" with the Yemeni authorities, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to bring those behind such "heinous" acts to justice.
"Perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of acts of terrorism must be brought to justice."
On Wednesday, a car laden with explosives was set off near the house of the Iranian ambassador. The powerful blast, which took place in the diplomatic district of the capital, left two people dead and several others wounded. It blew a large hole in a wall and sent rubble flying across the street.
According to official accounts, Ambassador Hossein Niknam had left the scene of explosion minutes before the incident and no Iranian diplomat was hurt there.
A local branch of al Qaeda in Yemen, known as al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), claimed responsibility for the blast.
Yemeni Foreign Minister Abdullah al-Sayadi condemned the bomb attack and stressed that Sanaa will seriously follow up on the issue.
In a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart on Thursday, Sayadi assured that Sanaa will take all the measures necessary to prevent the repetition of such incidents.
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif urged the Yemeni government to meet its commitments regarding the protection of diplomatic staff and premises.
Iranian diplomats have been targeted in Yemen before. One diplomat is being held hostage by militants and another was killed this year when he resisted a kidnapping attempt.
Zarif expressed concern over the fate of the Iranian diplomat who was kidnapped one and a half years ago and called on Yemeni authorities to take effective action to secure his release.
