More than 200 million ornamental fish were produced in Iran over the nine months to December 20, an expert with Iran’s Fisheries Organization said.
“Goldfish accounted for some 80 million or 40% of the total sum. These were cultivated to meet the domestic demand for fish during the New Year holidays,” Mohammad Hassan Elahi was also quoted as saying by IRNA.
During the two-week celebrations, Iranians keep goldfish in tanks as a symbol of life, happiness and health. The upcoming Iranian New Year holidays begin on March 21, 2017.
