Mobile World Congress 2017 began in Barcelona on February 27 with dozens of new smartphones vying for media attention. LG, Sony, Huawei, and other companies will use the big event as a showcase for their latest Android smartphones. 5G technologies will also start making entry to the market with the same superfast speeds promoted by their rivals.
Nokia will resurrect its classic 3310 mobile phone at MWC, but also reportedly plans to unveil some mid-tier Android smartphones for consumers who want something more than an invincible feature phone that can play Snake II. This is all part of Nokia’s comeback under HMD Global, according to the theverge.com.
Blackberry is also another blast from the past with the introduction of a new phone made by China's TCL called the Key One; it comes with a traditional QWERTY keyboard and aims to tap into the diminishing market of Blackberry owners.
After weeks of leaked specs and images, Lenovo is likely to unveil the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus at MWC. Meanwhile, Sony’s Xperia lineup of 2016 was rather underwhelming and failed to right the company’s ever-shrinking sales forecasts but it is likely they will come back this year with another top range of mobiles to win back the crowds.
Chinese mobile designer Huawei is also releasing its latest model the Huawei P10 which, unlike its previous top-range phones, looks to take on the likes of Apple and Samsung with premium material and great camera lenses.
More surprises will be released over the next few days, so keep an eye out for some curve balls from the tech companies including new forms of mobile communications which currently have no commercial name like Samsung's cross between a tablet and laptop. The congress ends on March 2.
