More than 80 samples of umbilical cord blood cells were stored this year at the umbilical cord blood bank of the Iranian Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research in South Khorasan Province.
“The increasing number of samples in the far eastern province shows people’s raised awareness on the importance of storing these cells,” said director of the blood bank Maliheh Behnamian, Sepidonline reported.
One of the best ways to treat blood diseases is using stems cells, since the method has a success rate of 70%.
Storage of stem cells is a valuable investment, Behnamian said, adding that the cost of collection and genetic testing is about $600 and the annual charge for storage is $30.
