Data released by Iran Airports Company shows only six Iranian airports namely Tehran’s Imam Khomeini and Mehrabad international airports and the Mashhad, Shiraz, Isfahan and Tabriz airports are making profit.
The remaining 48 airports are in the red. Hosting only one flight a week on average, the airports’ maintenance costs outweigh revenues.
In August, the Aviation High Council announced it would permit investors with as little as 300 billion rials ($8.57 million) and even one plane with less than 100 seats to establish airlines provided that they limit their flights to smaller suburban airports. The move was aimed at improving the performance of airports, ISNA reported.
