Top foreign policy advisor to the Leader of Islamic Revolution, Ali Akbar Velayati, welcomed the recent election of Michel Aoun as Lebanon's president.
"His rise to power will serve the interests of the resistance front that is assisting the Syrian government and nation in the fight against terrorism," Velayati told Fars News Agency on Saturday.
The resistance front refers to Iran's allies, including Lebanon's Hezbollah, which fight to block Israel's expansionist policies in the region.
"The election of Michel Aoun as president after almost two years of different challenges was a political victory. The better and stronger Lebanon grows, the more beneficial it will be for the Syrian government and nation and also for Iran, Iraq and the chain of resistance," he said.
Noting that Lebanon's national, regional and international situation will improve under Aoun, he said his presidency will support Hezbollah's assistance to the Syrian nation and government.
"The current situation in Lebanon is to the benefit of the united front in Syria," Velayati said.
The Lebanese Parliament on October 31 elected Aoun, a former army commander, as president, ending a 29-month presidential vacuum as part of a political deal that made Saad al-Hariri prime minister.
Just days after Aoun's election, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif visited Beirut and said in a meeting with Aoun, "Iran will always support Lebanon and is determined to improve cooperation with the Arab country."
