Poles to Study Sumar Oilfield

A memorandum of understanding was signed between the National Iranian Oil Company and Poland's state-run gas company PGNiG on studying the Sumar Oilfield in western Iran.

The MoU was signed in Tehran on Saturday in the presence of Gholamreza Manouchehri, the deputy head of NIOC, Piotr Wozniak, PGNiG's managing director, Salbali Karimi, managing director of Iranian Central Oil Fields Company and Alireza Jahankhah, head of reservoir operation in ICOFC, Shana reported.

According to Manouchehri, the Poles will study the field's geological structure and its  reserves in six months and provide NIOC with the results based on which an international tender will be announced to develop the field.

Underscoring PGNiG's expertise in research and development, Wozniak said, "We have already conducted similar research projects around the world including the North Sea and Pakistan and hope that the present agreement will help us expand our technical cooperation with Iran."

Pointing to the field's proximity to Naft Shahr, a district in Qasr-e Shirin County in Kermanshah Province, Karimi said oil from the field will be supplied to Kermanshah Refinery.

According to Jahankhah, the field's deposits are largely made up of light crude which is more expensive than heavy blends because it produces a higher percentage of gasoline and diesel fuel when converted into products in refineries. Iran's light crude has high demand.

Located in the western province of Kermanshah, Sumar is estimated to contain 475 million barrels of crude oil in place, 70 million barrels of which would be recoverable.
