In the first five months of the current Iranian year (started March 20), Shahid Bahonar Port in Hormozgan Province’s Bandar Abbas handled 55% more cargo than in the same period of last year, according to director general of the southern Iranian port, Mohammad Mohseni. Over 757,872 tons of goods (323 TEUs) were loaded and unloaded in the period, 526,484 tons of which were non-oil goods, including agricultural products, iron and construction materials, IRNA quoted Mohseni as saying. Shahid Bahonar is one of the most active southern ports of Iran for both passenger and freight transport. The port enjoys a strategic position due to its proximity to the Persian Gulf littoral states and the Iranian islands of Qeshm and Kish.
