Iranian athletes won four more medals, including two golds and two silvers, on the fifth day of the 2016 Summer Paralympic Games in Rio on September 12.
Power-lifter Majid Farzin took part in the men’s minus 80-kilogram competitions ournament and raised 240 kilograms overhead to win Iran's second gold medal as well as breaking world record, varzesh3.com reported.
"I had trained intensely for months for this medal. I thank God that all my efforts finally bore fruit, and I could bring honor to my family and nation," Farzin, 32, said after the contest.
In the men’s javelin competition, pitcher Mohammad Khalvandi earned Iran's third gold by throwing a world record distance with his first throw of 45.26 meters.
He broke his own world record two more times with his 5th throw of 45.85 meters and the 6th at 46.12 meters.
Khalvandi, hailing from Kermanshah, had also won a gold in the London 2012 games.
Abdollah Heidari won the silver medal of the competition with a throw of 43.77 meters.
Thrower Sajad Mohammadian vied in the men’s shot put competitions and picked a silver with a throw of 14.31 meters.
With a total of eight medals, three golds and five silvers, Iran was in 17th place in the medal table by the end of the fifth day.
Simialr to previous days, China is on the top of the table with 118 medals, the UK second with 63 medals and Ukraine third with 61 medals.
Iran’s National Paralympic Committee sent 111 athletes to the 12-day sporting event. Iranian sportsmen and women are competing in 12 fields. The Iranian delegation finished in 11th place in the previous edition, winning 10 golds, seven silvers and seven bronze medals.
Iranian Paralympians are still hopeful to win more medals in football, volleyball, wheelchair basketball, archery and athletics in the remaining six days.
The games end on September 18.
