Iran’s Telecommunications Infrastructure Company has signed a memorandum of understanding with Deutscher Commercial Internet Exchange (German Commercial Internet Exchange or DE-CIX).
DE-CIX is a carrier and data center-neutral Internet exchange point situated in Frankfurt, Germany.
According to ISNA, the company is to provide peering services to Iran.
Peering is a process by which two Internet networks connect and exchange traffic. It allows them to directly hand off traffic between each other’s customers, without having to pay a third party to carry that traffic across the Internet for them.
DE-CIX is the largest exchange point worldwide in terms of peak traffic with a maximum throughput of more than 5 terabits per second, according to their own literature.
In addition to Frankfurt, the company operates Internet exchange points in Hamburg, Munich, New York, Dallas, Dubai, Palermo, Marseille and Istanbul, connecting more than 600 ISPs, it’s own website claims.
However, considering its US operations, it does not say how it will deal with the Office of Foreign Assets Control and enter the Iranian market.
By connecting to the exchange, Iran should be able to communicate information directly with exchange points that may significantly reduce the cost, upgrade the quality and boost the speed of Internet services in Iran.
This should also enable Iran to become an Internet hub for its neighboring countries.
The new development follows the official launch of Iran’s National Information Network, which has nothing to do with this deal, according to reports from Tehran.
