Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called on Australia’s new envoy to step up efforts to resolve the problems facing Iranian immigrants in that country.

Australia’s Ambassador in Tehran Ian Biggs had a meeting with Zarif on Sunday to submit a copy of his credentials, Tasnim News Agency reported.

Highlighting the good interaction between Tehran and Canberra, Zarif called on the envoy to make efforts to resolve the problems of Iranian migrants in Australia and boost economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.

Biggs pledged efforts to settle the Iranians’ woes in his country within the framework of bilateral agreements.

He also hailed Iran as the region’s most stable and safest country, saying he is delighted to take a post in the Islamic Republic.

In March, Zarif paid a visit to Australia and met with high-ranking officials, including Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Minister of Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop. Expansion of economic ties, Iran’s illegal immigrants in Australia and their optional repatriation, exchange of delegations between the states, and Middle East and global affairs were among the key points discussed between Zarif and Australian authorities.
