Plans are underway to construct 2,500 kilometers of highway and 770 kilometers of railroad across the country by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2017), Deputy Roads and Urban Development Minister Amir Amini said.
Tehran recently signed a $4 billion deal with Italy’s highway agency ANAS for the construction and management of a 1,200-kilometer mega highway linking the Persian Gulf port of Bandar Imam Khomeini to Bazargan on Iran’s border with Turkey, ISNA reported.
Iran’s ambition to become a transportation hub in the region has gained momentum after the removal of western sanctions over its nuclear program and the country’s economic and diplomatic reconnection with the international community.
