Bulgaria and Iran have formalized a deal for the Balkan country to export honey to the Islamic Republic.
The decision was made in a meeting between Bulgarian Agriculture Minister Desislava Taneva and her Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Hojjati in Tehran on Monday, the Sofia-based news agency Novonite reported.
Iran itself is an exporter of honey to regional countries, including Bahrain, the UAE, Iraq, Kuwait, Azerbaijan and Afghanistan. Last year’s exports stood at about $6.5 million.
Taneva was accompanying a high-ranking delegation comprised of Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev, Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski, Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov, Agriculture Minister Desislava Taneva and Energy Minister Temenuzhka Petkova in addition to business representatives from the private sector.
The Bulgarian agriculture minister also called on Hojjati to consider Iran’s import of poultry and dairy products.
She invited the Iranian minister to pay a reciprocal visit to Bulgaria.
Bilateral trade of agricultural products rose sharply in the last few years from $3.13 million in 2013 to $52 million in 2015.
