President Hassan Rouhani described Pakistan as a “brotherly and friendly” neighbor, pointing to the two nations’ mutual interest in the region.

Rouhani made the remark in a telephone conversation with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday evening to wish him a speedy recovery after an open-heart surgery, Tasnim News Agency reported.

Rouhani hailed the strengthening of Tehran-Islamabad relations in light of the prudence of the Pakistani leader.

“The Iranian and Pakistani nations have common interests in the region, and the fraternity and friendship is growing,” he noted. Sharif said his Muslim nation stands with Iran and is ready for broader interaction.

Islamabad is prepared to work with Tehran in all fields of mutual interest, Sharif underscored.

Sharif, 66, underwent four bypasses on Tuesday at a hospital in London. It was the second open-heart operation for the Pakistani premier, who has been treated for heart problems over the past five years.
