Polyester is a synthetic fiber derived primarily from petroleum.
Fabrics woven or knitted from polyester thread or yarn are used extensively in the manufacture of apparel and home furnishings. Industrial polyester fibers, yarns and ropes are used in tire reinforcements, fabrics for conveyor belts, safety belts, coated fabrics and plastic reinforcements with high-energy absorption.
Polyester fibers are sometimes spun together with natural fibers to produce a cloth with blended properties. Cotton mixed with Polyester blends can be strong, wrinkle and tear-resistant and reduce shrinking.
The Persian daily Forsat-e Emrooz recently published an article on setting up a polyester fiber production line and the sector’s investment potential in Iran.
Investment Requirements
According to Mohammad Kazem Amid, deputy chairman of the Association of Iran Textile Industries, a plot of land measuring at least 10,000 square meters is required to set up a polyester production line capable of producing 30 tons of polyester fibers per day.
An investment of $5.5 million and 100 workers are needed.
The official believes that investing in the sector is a “solid and profitable” choice, as there is constant demand for polyester fibers for the manufacture of various products.
Amid noted that Iran is self-sufficient in producing polyester raw materials, as nearly all of the domestic demand for this material is met by Shahid Tondgouyan Petrochemical Company, with an annual output of more than 350,000 tons.
“The sector has vast untapped potential, which is already well-equipped with quality raw materials,” he said.
“All the sector needs is more advanced production machinery before it can embark on export to Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkey or even European countries.”
