A senior official said Tehran and Moscow enjoy long-term, strategic relations whose growing trend cannot be reversed.
Ali Akbar Velayati, a foreign affairs adviser to the Leader of Islamic Revolution, made the statement in a Tuesday meeting with Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev in Moscow where political and security exchanges as well as regional cooperation were discussed, IRNA reported.
Velayati said high-ranking officials of the two sides are determined to take cooperation to an "unprecedented" level, especially against the scourge of terrorism.
"The Middle East is in an undesirable condition. Terrorist groups and extremist elements have compromised security in the region, with the support of some regional and trans-regional states," he said.
"Iran, as an independent country, has clearly announced its principled positions and undertaken practical measures against terrorism and extremism to promote peace."
Patrushev said the opportunities created after the implementation of the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers should be fully used.
"There are enormous capacities that need serious steps by the two sides to yield benefits. Russia is completely ready for that," he said.
The Russian official also noted that Tehran and Moscow have common stands against those who endanger calm in the region, hence boosting cooperation against them could help enhance regional stability.
Velayati, who is also the head of Strategic Research Center of the Expediency Council, arrived in Moscow early Monday for an official four-day visit to discuss with Russian officials on political and security relations, in addition to regional cooperation and Iran’s accession to Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
On the first day of his Moscow visit, the senior official met Russia's Special Envoy on Syria Alexander Lavrentiev to confer on latest developments in the crisis-ridden state of Syria, as well as mutual cooperation against the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group, outlawed in Russia and many other countries.
