President Hassan Rouhani wrote a letter to Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani on Wednesday, requesting the case of the attacks on the Saudi Embassy in Iran to be given priority and be investigated urgently and "out of turn."
All those involved in the "obvious" crime should be brought to justice to ensure that such incidents that undermine Iran's "might and status" do not happen ever again, he said during a Cabinet meeting, IRNA reported.
Saudi Arabia announced on Saturday that it executed Saudi Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr alongside three other Shias and 43 Al-Qaeda-linked convicts in 12 cities across the Arab kingdom.
The prominent cleric's execution sparked protests in Iran, prompting protesters to storm the Saudi Embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad.
Next day, the Arab country declared a decision to break off bilateral ties.
The president also denounced Saudi officials for their "wrong" decision to cut bilateral ties, calling on them to return to their senses.
"We ask the Saudi government to undo past mistakes and retrace this wrong and futile path," he said.
Rouhani described the execution of the cleric as a "cruel" and "unjustifiable" act, saying, "[He] was unjustly jailed for criticizing the Saudi government and was wrongfully convicted and executed."
