The dossier for the inscription of Yazd’s historical texture on the UNESCO World Heritage List is expected to be submitted by mid-December, according to the office of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization in Yazd.

“Iran already boasts UNESCO-listed cities, but they’re uninhabited. That means Yazd may become the Iran’s first ancient city on the World Heritage List in which people still live,” IRNA quoted Mohammad Mehdi Sherafat, the head of the provincial office of ICHHTO, as saying.

With a historical texture covering 2,270 hectares, Yazd is thought to be one of – if not the first - adobe city in the world

Yazd’s candidacy for world heritage status is expected to be reviewed during the 40th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Istanbul, Turkey (July 10-20, 2016).

The organization has commissioned a 20-minute film to document the inscription process of Yazd.

In October experts from the France-based International Center for Earthen Architecture, CRAterre, traveled to Yazd to aid local officials compile the dossiers and help monitor and preserve the city’s historical texture.

Yazd’s historical texture was inscribed on the National Heritage List in 2005.

The historical city of Susa in Khuzestan Province and the ancient Meymand Village in Kerman Province were inscribed on the list during the World Heritage Committee’s 39th session in Bonn in July, increasing the number of world heritage sites in Iran to 19.
