A Syrian official hailed Iran's positive stance on the crisis facing the Arab country, stressing that the key role Tehran has played in helping settle regional disputes is undeniable.
Adnan Hassan Mahmoud, Syria's ambassador in Tehran, made the remark on Wednesday in a meeting with Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani, in which the two officials exchanged views on the latest developments in Syria, ICANA reported.
Mahmoud said, "The Syrian people and officials have always appreciated Iran's unconditional support [to help] restore peace to Syria."
"Fighting extremism and terrorist groups which brutally kill innocent Syrian citizens needs to be a top priority for the international community."
"The Syrians will strongly stand up to all those who want the country to be disintegrated," Syria's envoy quoted President Bashar al-Assad as saying.
Hailing the popular resistance in the Arab state against extremists, Larijani noted, "Not only ordinary people but also Syrian leaders have endured hard times combating terrorism in recent years, [a fact] which is definitely praiseworthy."
"Islamic Republic of Iran's support for the Syrians is based on ethical and religious principles," the Majlis speaker pointed out, adding that Iran believes Syrian leaders should be given time to address domestic challenges through creative diplomatic approaches.
Consultations With Russia
As Iran's political peace plan to defuse the crisis in Syria is expected to be implemented in the near future, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, is to meet his Russian counterpart Mikhail Bogdanov in Moscow on Monday.
Tehran and Moscow will review the current regional developments and explore a course of action to resolve the growing crises in Syria and Iraq.
The two sides have always stressed the settlement of regional issues through diplomatic means without foreign intervention.
Iran and Russia believe that the adoption of a unified policy by the international community is the only way to fight terrorism; furthermore, western and Arab states ought to stop providing militant groups with financial assistance.
