‘Taboo’ in MWFF Competition

The film ‘Taboo’, directed by Khosro Masoumi is competing in the 39th Montreal World Film Festival in the ‘World Competition’ section.

The film unravels the story of a 67-year-old Iranian landowner from the northern part of the country. Despite having three legal wives, he wants to marry the beautiful 24-year-old daughter of one of his workers, ISNA reports.

Iranian films ‘Closer’ by Mostafa Ahmadi, ‘Age of Love’ by Alireza Raisian, ‘Confessions of My Dangerous Mind’ by Hooman Seyedi, ‘Death of Fish’ by Roohollah Hejazi and ‘Judgment Day’ a short film by Karim Amini  are also entries at the festival.

In addition, ‘Muhammad’ the latest film by renowned director Majid Majidi (three-time winner of the Grand Prix des Amériques) will open the festival having its world premiere at the event. The 171-minute epic film on the early years of the prophet of Islam with a budget of over $50 million, is the most expensive film ever made in Iran. Its production took five years.

Iran has a strong presence in this year’s edition, competing with over 2000 short and long movies from over 80 countries.

The jury awards in the World Competition section include: the Grand Prix of the Americas, Special Grand Prix of the Jury and awards for best director, best actress, best actor, best screenplay, best artistic contribution, and innovation. Two prizes for short films are also awarded.

The 39th Montreal World Film Festival will be held from August 27 to September 7

 Cultural Diversity

Established in 1977, the annual event in Montreal, Canada aims to encourage cultural diversity and understanding among nations, foster cinema from all continents by stimulating development of quality cinema, promote filmmakers and innovative works, discover and encourage new talents, and promote global meetings between cinema professionals.

It is the only competitive film festival in North America recognized by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF).
