All major electricity companies and power plants have either been privatized or will be so in future, Mir Ali-Ashraf Abdollahpouri Hosseini, the head of Iranian Privatization Organization, said on Thursday.

According to the official, except for the government's 20% share, the rest will be transferred to the private sector sooner or later.

"IPO is evaluating the value of the electricity distribution companies' assets," he said.

"As long as the electricity sector is subsidized, not only is it impossible to transfer the industry from the public sector to the private sector, but even the government's share cannot be sold," Fars News Agency quoted him as saying.

Gholamreza Khosh-Kholq, deputy manager of Iran Power Generation, Transmission & Distribution Management Company—aka Tavanir— said on Thursday, "Privatization of electricity distribution companies is being done based on the constitutional law, so everybody should comply with it."

According to Khosh-Kholq, the asset assessment process will be finalized in a month and major decisions will be taken subsequently.
