President Hassan Rouhani said the landmark nuclear agreement reached between Iran and world powers in Vienna on July 14 displayed "the power of diplomacy to settle international disputes".
Rouhani made the statement in a meeting with visiting EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Tuesday, IRNA reported.
He said the negotiating parties worked hard for days to clinch the accord, officially named the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which could have wider implications for the region and the world.
He noted that the agreement can serve as a model for settlement of other regional and global disputes.
"This agreement conveys the message of peace for the international community and indicates the fact that international agreements can still be effective if they are fairly observed and that dialogue can solve political problems."
Pointing to the "historical" relations between Iran and Europe, he said based on their cultural, religious, and national principles, the Iranians are committed to their pledges, noting that the proper implementation of the JPCOA, after approval by the relevant authorities, will help improve Tehran's international ties.
Rouhani called for greater scientific, technological, cultural, and political collaboration with the European Union besides enhanced economic and commercial relations.
Referring to the ongoing "tragedies" afflicting the people in some Middle East countries, the president said the nuclear deal could give a boost to the campaign against terrorism and help bring an end to the killing of innocent people.
He reiterated that the Vienna accord will not be to the detriment of any country, including regional states.
A Step Forward
The EU top diplomat expressed pleasure about her visit to Iran after the accord, describing the JCPOA as a step forward in efforts to promote peace.
Mogherini assured that the European Union unanimously supports the nuclear deal.
She promised in her capacity as a member of the dispute resolution commission envisaged in the JCPOA to do her best to ensure "proper, accurate and timely" implementation of the agreement.
She expressed EU's resolve to open a new chapter in ties with Iran and said, "It is logical to invest as much political capital in the implementation of the JPCOA as was spent on reaching the accord itself."
Mogherini said she will make every effort to pave the way for high-level collaboration between Iran and the EU in such areas as economy, commerce, environment and region.
The foreign policy chief said other European officials plan to visit Iran in the coming weeks, with a view to helping enhance ties.
Mogherini, accompanied by EU political director Helga Schmid, arrived in Tehran on Tuesday on a one-day trip for talks on implementing the nuclear pact.
