Rice imports show a teetering trend oscillating between 1.1 and 2 million tons over the past four years (2011-15), according to Iran Rice Importers Association. Since domestic rice production accounts for only 21 percent of total consumption, the rest is imported, IRNA reported. Import permits are issued cyclically, which results in increased demand during import allowance seasons, resulting in adverse consequences such as price increase in exporting countries, rise of substandard contraband rice and unpaid taxes. About 50 million tons of substandard rice are smuggled into the country every month, according to the association. The association has called for stricter supervision and a more sustained process in issuing permits for rice imports.
