The chairperson of the Mexican Senate Foreign Relations Committee voiced her country's willingness to expand ties with Iran in political, economic, commercial, industrial, scientific, technological and cultural spheres.

Gabriela Cuevas Barron, who has travelled to Iran at the head of a parliamentary delegation, made the remark in a meeting with Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani in Tehran on Monday, ISNA reported.

Hailing Iran's position as "a large and significant country" in the Middle East region, she said the Mexican senate will back every effort to strengthen ties with Tehran.

Cuevas said Mexico has suffered from challenges such as violence, drug trafficking and terrorism during its history, so it fully understands the implications of terrorism and extremism prevailing around Iran.

"The only way to root out terrorism is a true and determined confrontation by the whole international community with the phenomenon," she noted.

In the meeting, Chairman of the National Defense Commission of the Mexican Senate Fernando Yunes Marquez expressed Mexico's interest to improve wide-ranging ties with Iran with a view to diversifying the country's international relations in line with its national interests.

Larijani described mutual relations as "positive and growing," expressing Tehran's keenness to enhance ties with the Latin American country in view of the existing capacities.

Pointing to the significant role the parliaments can play to help boost bilateral relations, he expressed hope ties between the two countries would be enhanced through increased parliamentary cooperation.
