The deputy foreign minister for Arab and African Affairs called on the United Nations to take "effective" and "deterrent" action to stop the blatant massacre of the defenseless Yemeni people by Saudi strikes, which are carried out in violation of international regulations.

Hossein Amir Abdollahian made the appeal in a phone conversation with the UN secretary general's new envoy for Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, on Monday, IRNA reported.

Describing the Saudi aggression against Yemen as "unacceptable", he urged the UN and international relief agencies to make efforts to help end the ongoing crisis in Yemen as soon as possible, expressing the Islamic Republic's readiness to help resolve the conflict in the Arab country.

Cheikh Ahmed, for his part, praised the "constructive" collaboration of Iran with the UN and said Iran plays a significant role in regional developments. "The UN needs to consult with Iran in solving regional crises," he noted.

The UN official also said his organization has concentrated its efforts to help solve the Yemeni crisis simultaneously on three fronts, namely securing a lasting ceasefire, holding inclusive national dialogue, and dispatching humanitarian aid to the crisis-hit country.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham had announced on Sunday that Iran in collaboration with the UN has arranged a new channel to send humanitarian assistance to Yemen. However, she refused to provide any further details on the channel.
